Biography
Pablo de Pedro Cano studied viola with Thomas Riebl and Veronika Hagen at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. From 2003 to 2005 he served as principal viola of the European Union Chamber Orchestra, performing with the ensemble throughout Europe, the United States, Asia, and South America. He later joined the Concentus Musicus Wien, where he had the privilege of working with Nikolaus Harnoncourt—an influence that proved decisive in shaping his artistic approach. A specialist in historical performance, he is principal violist of the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, Concentus Musicus Wien, the Irish Baroque Orchestra, Europa Galante, and Collegium Vocale Gent, and is frequently invited as guest principal viola by the Kammerorchester Basel and the Orchestra of the 18th Century. He appears regularly in many of the world’s leading concert halls and has recorded for labels such as Sony Music and Deutsche Grammophon. As a soloist, he has performed with Concentus Musicus Wien, the Wiener Akademie, Europa Galante, and Il Convito. Pablo de Pedro Cano is Professor of Historical Viola at the Royal College of Music in London and serves on the artistic committee of the Balthasar Neumann Academy, where he helps lead international initiatives such as CuE and Balthasar NOVA, in addition to giving numerous masterclasses. As a conductor, he seeks to convey the experience gained through his work with figures such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Thomas Hengelbrock, and Philippe Herreweghe.
