Biography
The Seikilos Quartet was founded in 2011 within the Spanish National Youth Orchestra (JONDE). Its members are Iván Gornemann and Pablo Quintanilla (violins), Adrián Vázquez (viola), and Lorenzo Meseguer (cello). The four musicians met at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid and later completed their studies at prestigious European institutions such as the Musikhochschule Düsseldorf, the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg, the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig, and the Reina Sofía School of Music.
The group resumed its activity in 2018 with a clear vocation to explore a wide-ranging repertoire, devoting part of its work to the rediscovery of twentieth-century Spanish music. Its name, Seikilos, refers to the celebrated ancient Greek musical epitaph considered the oldest known complete piece of music—an emblem of the quartet’s interest in the enduring nature of art through time.
The members of the Seikilos Quartet have received guidance from renowned ensembles such as the Hagen Quartet, Bennewitz Quartet, Quiroga Quartet, and Diotima Quartet, and were part of the International Institute of Chamber Music of the Reina Sofía School of Music under the mentorship of Günter Pichler. In 2021, they were awarded the “Emerging Ensemble” prize by the Spanish Association of Classical Music Festivals (FestClásica), and in 2024 they received the BBVA Foundation Leonardo Grant for their work in recovering Spain’s musical heritage.
Among their most notable projects is a monographic album dedicated to the composer Conrado del Campo, featuring the recording of his String Quartet No.10 and Scherzo for the Fundación Juan March record label (2025). The quartet maintains an active concert schedule, performing regularly at major festivals and concert series such as the CNDM, Granada International Music Festival, Santander International Festival, Quincena Musical de San Sebastián, and Fundación Juan March, among others.
